It’s all about stress and how your body copes with it physically, emotionally and spiritually.
We are constantly exposed to internal and external stressors but you may not have thought about what is making you look physically older than someone else the same age as you and, whose body is coping with stress. So knowing your limits and finding ways of coping, for example, having a regular treatment such as massage or Reiki, can help take years off you – literally.
The stress hormone cortisol is often increased by the body when we are tired. A side effect of this, which most of us suffer from, is the dreaded dark circles that appear around our eyes.
This is all part of our natural fight or flight response. When the body is stressed, blood vessels swell as blood increases and this, in turn, happens to the vessels under our eyes. A lot happens when we sleep including the release of growth hormones which are produced for skin renewal and collagen, which keeps us youthful. This adds to the fine lines, skin congestion and dark circles. Even our wonderful immune system suffers if we do not get our required quota of sleep making us susceptible to colds, viruses, and general skin complaints like breakouts and rashes.
So we need to feed and hydrate our tired skin to restore moisture and plumpness and lift and brighten the skin.
Keeping digital devices away from the bedroom is a good way to get a good night’s sleep as these disturb us with noise and blue light.
Meditation, some form of relaxation like reading or even a massage all help with sleep disturbance. It’s all about things that help with stress and the way stress affects us and what, for you, helps you cope with the effects of stress on your body, mind and spirit.
